Simulation and Characterization of the compression molding process of local reinforced SMC
Advisor: Henning (FAST), Hrymak (UWO)
The objective of this PhD-project is to develop a method to simulate the molding process of Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) in combination with unidirectional fiber reinforcements with B-staged hybrid resin (patches). By simulating the fiber orientation distributions of the SMC and the displacement of the patches in the final part, new semi-structural parts can be designed and optimized.
The process simulation will use a temperature, shear rate and deformation rate dependent material model to describe the typical SMC plug-flow. To gain the input for this model, a new rheological tool with various pressure sensors will be used. By measuring the pressure distributions for different deformation rates, all model parameters can be determined. The displacement of patches will be predicted by using a fluid-structure-interaction.
